Cataract and Refractive Fellowship
The Cataract and Refractive Fellowship involves the following:
- clinical experience
- research activities
- surgical component**
The Cataract and Refractive Fellow actively participates in patient care. This involves assessing patients both pre- and post-operatively, recommending the type of cataract and refractive surgery the patient is most suited for, and participation in patient education activities. The remaining time is spent in research activities and surgical skills development in the wet-lab, observation in the OR and hands on experience in the laser suite.
Prior to performing independent surgery, a fellow observes and assists the senior surgeons in the laser suite with the refractive surgery techniques. A skills transfer set-up provides the fellow with an excellent wet-lab program in cataract and refractive.
Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in medical research, and administration meetings, in-house medical education programs and quality improvement activities.
**Due to patient choice, patient scheduling, patient selection criteria and regional regulations, the Centre cannot guarantee that a fellow will have surgical experience. A fellow's surgical volume will be dependent upon an assessment of the individual's surgical skills, their ability to meet established prerequisites, the fellow's ability to recruit patients and the current regional regulations, however, excellent opportunities for observation, and assistance of high volume surgeons in advanced cataract and refractive methods and techniques will provide a distinct and excellent advantage to the successful candidate.
