David Camoriano, MD

Ophthalmologist - Fellow
What is a fellow? A fellow is an ophthalmologist who is invited to obtain in-depth, specialized training at Gimbel Eye Centre. The opportunity to study a sub-specialty comes after a doctor completes a three to five year residency program in a specialty such as ophthalmology. Fellowship programs provide more in-depth study and experience than residency programs can provide.
Dr. Camoriano chose a Gimbel Eye Centre fellowship affiliated with the University of Calgary because he noticed during his residency program that Dr. Gimbel has made many contributions to the field of ophthalmology. ”I found myself reviewing his teaching videos on YouTube* whenever I needed clarification on a particular surgical step or technique.” He felt he would greatly appreciate the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Gimbel, “one of the most accomplished, gifted, and influential Ophthalmologists in the world.”
Combining his clinical and surgical skills to give patients the gift of better vision is one of Dr. Camoriano’s passions. He finds this goal challenging, mentally stimulating, and personally rewarding. He describes the eye as “one of the most aesthetically pleasing structures in the human body”, and considers it a blessing to have the daily opportunity to examine the eyes of his patients.
Born and raised in Honduras, Dr. Camoriano comes to his fellowship with an MD from McGill University along with the significant experience in ophthalmology he gained in his residency program at the University of Texas in Galveston. In that program he learned the principles of cataract surgery and numerous other ophthalmology techniques. He also volunteered at Saint Vincent’s Clinic in Galveston, caring for indigent patients not covered by health insurance, which gave him an even deeper appreciation for Canada’s health care system.
Outdoor activities such as mountain biking, camping, and hiking are favorites of Dr. Camoriano. “As a true Honduran”, he also loves to play soccer. On weekends he likes to spend mornings at coffee shops reading nonfiction or playing chess.
*Over 100 surgical training videos by Dr. Gimbel have already been added to the Gimbel Library on YouTube. These videos are the result of an educational project funded by Gimbel Eye Foundation, and are referenced daily by residents, fellows, and surgeons around the world.
