Eugene Tay, FRCOphth.

Ophthalmologist - Fellow
What is a fellow? A fellow is an ophthalmologist who is invited to obtain in-depth, specialized training at Gimbel Eye Centre. The opportunity to study a sub-specialty comes after a doctor completes a three or four year residency program in a specialty such as ophthalmology. Fellowship programs provide more in-depth study and experience than a residency program can provide. Some physicians, like Dr. Tay, choose fellowship training after years of experience in their specialty.
Dr. Tay says “Ophthalmology is a discipine which involves the challenging combination of microsurgical precision, an in-depth understanding of optical physics and the ability to embrace ever changing technologies. Being able to improve the quality of vision and restore sight is immensely rewarding.”
In 1997, Dr. Tay graduated from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, of the University of London, which has a distinguished tradition dating back to 1123. He has been in the practice of ophthalmology since 1999, and received the majority of his training at the internationally renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He has also trained at other prestigious London Teaching Hospitals, such as the Western Eye Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. In 2009, Dr. Tay completed a Fellowship in Oculoplastics at Moorfields Eye Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Richard Collin, who is a past President of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Tay is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he completed a Masters of Science in Immunology in 1998 at Imperial College London, and has published scientific papers in international medical journals, as well as presented at international conferences such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting. In his career, Dr. Tay has been trained to perform a wide variety of Oculoplastic and Anterior Segment surgeries.
During his leisure time, Dr. Tay enjoys skiing, swimming, and hiking and feels that Alberta is the perfect environment to pursue these interests. He is also an avid collector of vintage wristwatches.
