M. Aman-Ullah
Ophthalmologist - Fellow

What is a fellow? A fellow is an ophthalmologist who is invited to obtain in-depth, specialized training at Gimbel Eye Centre. The opportunity to study a sub-specialty comes after a doctor completes a three or four year residency program in a specialty such as ophthalmology. Fellowship programs provide more in-depth study and experience than a residency program can provide. Some physicians, like Dr. Aman, choose fellowship training after years of experience in their specialty.

Dr. Aman says that he chose a fellowship at Gimbel Eye Centre because “from the beginning of my career I heard about the wonderful state-of-the-art work being done at Gimbel Eye Centre.  I feel fortunate to learn more from the vast experience of Dr. H. V. Gimbel.”

Both of Dr. Aman’s parents are physicians.  His father’s textbook of ophthalmology fascinated him with the intricate details.  The challenge of entering an extremely competitive field and learning a difficult surgical art further inspired him to choose ophthalmology in the final year of his medical school.

Dr. Aman comes to his fellowship with vast experience in ophthalmology, working in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Qatar.  After basic training in Pakistan he worked for 6 years in the UK and completed his Royal College certification.  He did further fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, in managing challenging cases of Pediatric Ophthalmology.  He also spent one year working as a locum tenens Pediatric Ophthalmologist in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In Pakistan Dr. Aman worked to set up clinics to prevent blindness for people with diabetes, as well as pediatric ophthalmology pathology.  Dr. Aman feels fortunate to have worked in so many different countries and cultures and finds it uniquely rewarding to meet and help in the care of people from all over the world.

Dr. Aman  likes to read, swim, run, ride horses, and play tennis.  He has been married for 20 years and has 3 children: a son - Suhaib (18), and two daughters - Malaya (16), and Eliza (5).  He says “I am grateful for my wife and children’s support and love as I further my career in ophthalmology.”
