Joyce K. Lee, OD
Optometrist
"I chose to become an optometrist because of my childhood experiences," says Dr. Joyce Lee. "I had been seeing an optometrist regularly and I always appreciated being able to see crisply and clearly after I received new glasses. As I got older I enjoyed options like contact lenses." In her position as an optometrist with Gimbel Eye Centre—Calgary, Dr. Lee is able to provide her patients with an even newer option for vision correction-refractive surgery.
Dr. Lee sees educating her patients as an important part of her practice. "My position gives me a good opportunity to educate people so that they can make an informed decision about surgery." She also appreciates the opportunity she has to serve as a liaison between Gimbel Eye Centre and optometrists with questions about the rapidly evolving field of refractive surgery.
Dr. Lee's formal education began at the University of Calgary where she received a Bachelor of Science with a major in Zoology. She then attended the University of Waterloo, graduating with a Doctor of Optometry degree. During her optometric studies, Dr. Lee worked as an intern with OMNI Eye Services in Baltimore, Maryland. There she became familiar with a general ophthalmology practice and began to focus on before and after surgery care for cataract patients, an area she continues to enjoy. "I always like to care for my older patients," she says. "There are often changes in eye health to detect and seniors have so many interesting experiences to share."
Upon completing her degree, Dr. Lee returned to Calgary where she associated at a private optometry practice. She chose to move to Gimbel Eye Centre because "it is a great opportunity to gain more experience in caring for refractive patients. The Gimbel Eye Centre is extremely reputable amongst my colleagues and it is well respected by the public. The Centre has a reputation for being very professional and very friendly." This mirrors Dr. Lee's personal style—a friendly, outgoing person, Dr. Lee has a good sense of humour and an easily apparent commitment to her profession.
Dr. Lee also enjoys a busy personal life. She is married to Warner, a dentist, and the two of them enjoy spending time together as well as enjoying the challenges and joys of raising their 2 daughters, Rachel and Amy . Travelling to places with interesting architecture or striking landscapes is of particular interest to Dr. Lee and her husband.
