Rachel Mandel, OD
Optometrist

Dr. Rachel Mandel completed her Doctor of Optometry degree in May 2007 at Nova Southeastern University, where she also earned a Bachelor of Vision Science degree. Prior to this, she commenced a Bachelor of Biological Science degree at University of Calgary, completing it with a Pre-professional-premedical degree at Florida Atlantic University.

Completing her Doctor of Optometry degree in Florida allowed Dr. Mandel to observe many interesting cases that she will probably never see again, such as advanced diabetic retinopathy and infectious retinal and corneal diseases, among others. "Optometry in Florida proved to be very challenging and educational," states Dr. Mandel. "My time there as a health care professional was very rewarding and I enjoyed helping people with their vision, one of their most precious and important senses."

During her undergraduate studies at Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Mandel gained additional knowledge and experience by volunteering at an optometrist's office. Through Florida Atlantic University, she also spent time doing ecological studies in the Everglades. After being accepted at Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Mandel dedicated herself full-time to her studies, obtaining a very well rounded education and valuable experience in a specialty strabismus and amblyopic clinic, where she provided vision therapy and worked with neuro and oculoplastic ophthalmologists as well as retinal and glaucoma specialists.

Dr. Mandel was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. A visit to her optometrist at the age of ten sparked her initial interest in optometry. She excelled in science, math and physics throughout her schooling, which laid the foundation for achieving her goal of becoming an optometrist. While pursuing her Doctor of Optometry degree, Dr. Mandel was particularly intrigued by the technology in optometry and enjoyed collaborating with other health care professionals.

Dr. Mandel and her husband, Alexander Gannon, were married in August 2007. They have chosen to live in Edmonton to enable Dr. Mandel to launch her career in optometry while being close to her parents and brother. Dr. Mandel and her husband enjoy attending Edmonton Symphony concerts and various fundraising events.
Dr. Mandel practices yoga on a regular basis and enjoys many outdoor activities.
