Sunil Mehta, OD
Optometrist
Dr. Sunil Mehta is a native Edmontonian, born and raised in the northeast section of the City.
He attended the University of Alberta taking general science in his first two years. Although his ultimate goal was optometry, he was missing some prerequisites and decided to try pharmacy.
After one year of pharmacy, he was accepted into the optometry program at the University of Waterloo. "This was a major decision," he says, "since the pharmaceutical industry was booming at the time."
Although he enjoyed living in Waterloo he returned to Edmonton every summer. He held summer jobs at a variety of places including an optical company, Miseracordia Hospital and the Royal Alex Hospital.
He also volunteered at Gimbel Eye Centre and worked there as an ophthalmic technician one summer. "There was no question in my mind that I wanted to return to Gimbel after graduating," he says. "I found that the people at Gimbel Eye Centre had integrity and they provided great support and motivation for me to move forward." Dr. Mehta graduated with his optometry degree in June 2004.
As a Gimbel Eye Centre optometrist, he enjoys meeting patients from all walks of life and all countries. The most satisfying aspect of his work is educating the public. "I always like to work with healthy eyes," he says. "But it is very rewarding to help someone with an eye condition that greatly benefits from treatment."
Dr. Mehta also enjoys reading about and using the latest technology. "It fascinates me when I find out that an eye condition that could not be helped before is now being treated - or even cured. One day I hope to become involved with eye care missions around the world to help those who cannot afford proper care."
Outside of work, Dr. Mehta is a big music, car and golf fan, but likes sports of all kinds. He is single and enjoys spending time with his family in Edmonton. He credits some of his success to a hard-working background. "My parents always told me that hard work will pay off eventually," he says.
