Luge is a very high-speed sport and it requires
you to know where you are at every moment of your run. Being very uncomfortable wearing contacts, I
felt my vision was holding me back. There simply isn't time
during a run, when you are moving over 130 km per hour, to blink
and moisten your contact lenses.
Naturally, I thought laser eye surgery could be a possible
solution, but at the same time, I knew I would be putting
everything I've worked so hard for in the surgeon's hands —
including my chance at a second Olympic Games in front of a home
crowd in Vancouver 2010.
I contacted Gimbel Eye Centre because I knew they had a
variety of corrective solutions and that they would be able to
offer me whatever option suited me best as well as the best
chance for success. In the end, I chose PRK surgery and I have
had no regrets.
I wake up in the morning and can see the clock
without any help and I have yet to miss my glasses or contacts.
Not only is it a blessing to my everyday life to be free from
corrective lenses, it is also already helping me achieve my sport
goals. I've already noticed a boost in my awareness of where I
am while practicing our starts this dry land season in less time
than was expected — and I can't wait to apply that improvement
to true high speed driving.
From the first telephone call to Gimbel, I could
tell they were not only highly professional, but that they were
genuinely interested in helping me. As an Olympic athlete, I
contact a lot of companies asking for help and it is refreshing
to see a company come through for me and treat me as wonderfully
as Gimbel has.
Thank you, Gimbel!

As a high performance biathlete, my eyesight is very
important. It is the difference of a hit or a missed
target or the seconds that it takes to blink to readjust
my contacts. Thanks to Gimbel Eye Centre, I am no longer
at this disadvantage during my training and
competitions.I received IntraLase LASIK surgery on May 9, 2007,
and my experience was nothing but the best. Dr. Kassab and the staff at Gimbel were amazing. They
helped me choose the proper LASIK procedure, performed
the surgery with ease and made the recovery time quick
and smooth.
Only a few weeks have passed since my surgery and I
am back into full time training. This includes several
hours of physical training a day along with 2-3 hours of
shooting time. With my new eyes, I've already seen major
improvements in my accuracy and speed in shooting, the
targets appear crisp and sharp. Plus, I no longer
rush home from training sessions to remove those dry
itchy contacts!
I look forward to the upcoming race season to try out
my new eyes!
Thank you!

Sandra Keith: An
Olympian's Eyes on the Target
|
Two years ago, Sandra Keith, the
twenty-five-year-old Olympic biathlete from Canmore,
Alberta, elected to have laser surgery at the Gimbel
Eye Centre in Calgary to correct her astigmatism and
myopia. "When you are competing on a
world-class level, you can't be blinking while you
need to be shooting," says Keith. She explains
that her sport requires her to fire off five shots
in 20 seconds, a feat that until her surgery her
competitors were able to do a split second faster
than she could, as she would have to blink to keep
her contact lenses lubricated.
Keith's shooting time improved and her accuracy has
improved as well. At the 2005 World Cup, held in
December in Hochflizen, Austria, Keith hit 20 for 20
targets, a rate of accuracy she had not met in
competition since well before her surgery.

Sharing
her dramatically improved perspective with patients,
Jacquie Gregory joins Gimbel Eye Centre's team
|
A couple years ago, I would wake up in the morning,
fumble blindly for the alarm clock and hold it a couple
of inches from my face – just to see what time it was.
Due to my high prescription, I needed to be equipped
with either my glasses or beloved contacts to manoeuvre
around my apartment, but more importantly, to function
effectively throughout the day.
That all changed on April 17, 2003 when Dr. Gimbel
performed my ICL surgery. In less than 20 minutes, I
went from legally blind without visual aids to a 20/15
visual acuity measurement. I will never forget the
feeling of looking up and seeing Dr. Gimbel’s smiling
eyes hovering approximately three feet from my face
without any visual assistance. Over the course of the
next few months, I was in awe of my surgery as I viewed
a seemingly new world with vision that was somehow
crisper and sharper than I had ever experienced with my
glasses or contacts. The newly found freedom and
convenience in my lifestyle was so amazing that I
decided I wanted to join the Gimbel Eye Centre team and
be a part of sharing that drastic change with others.
In 2005, I began
working for Gimbel Eye Centre as an Ophthalmic
Technician, testing the vision of other patients and
helping each one of them make a life changing decision
too.

Laser surgery credited with saving a woman's life
Lynne deCou had laser eye surgery in 1997 and believes it is one of the reasons she is alive today.
A tornado ripped through the Green Acres campground in Pine Lake, Alta. On July 14 at about 7 p.m. The twister catapulted Ms. deCou and her 12-metre trailer into the water. Incredibly she, her family and their toy poodle survived the tornado that killed 12 people.
"Being able to see without glasses was a miracle."

Elaine Kupser, Publisher of IMPACT Magazine,
expresses her view of the Gimbel Eye Centre experience
|
"It has been 10 years since I have had my refractive eye surgery, and it is still to this day one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
As an active, sports-minded person, it was always inconvenient doing certain sports with either glasses or contact lenses. When wearing contact lenses became more and more difficult, the introduction of laser eye surgery was like a dream come true.
Following surgery, I was overwhelmed by this modern-day miracle, and I still count my blessings that I have been so fortunate. It really has been a life-changing experience, and both my vision, and outlook is still 20/20."
