2006 Dr. Chirag Shah joins Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary

In honour of 100 years of medicine in Alberta, 
Dr. Howard V. Gimbel is selected as one of Alberta's "Physicians of The Century," for his "contributions to the health and well being of Albertans."

Gimbel Eye Centre is first to use the IntraLase® laser to complete all-laser LASIK procedures in Alberta

2004

First in western Canada to obtain Pentacam to photograph and analyze the front of 
the eye

Gimbel Eye Centre celebrates 40 years of service

2003

Dr. Gimbel promoted to Clinical Associate Professor at University of Calgary

2000

Dr. Gimbel is appointed Professor and Chair, Dept. of Ophthalmology, Loma Linda University and accepts half time staff appointment

First in Canada to perform OPD-Scan Wavefront-guided laser surgery

Dr. van Westenbrugge at Gimbel Eye Centre is the first in Canada to perform Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS)

1999

Dr. Gimbel receives award for his groundbreaking achievements from Medical Devices Canada, a federal government agency

First in North America to remove cataracts by laser; though, Gimbel Eye Centre surgeons continue to prefer the standard of care and more efficient surgical technique of Kelman phacoemulsification for their patients (i.e., the surgeon uses an ultrasonic, vibrating probe to emulsify the lens of the eye and extract it through a very small incision that can self-seal without the need for stitches)

1997

Dr. Gimbel is first in Canada to perform Implantable Corrective Lens (ICL) surgery

Dr. Geoff Kaye joins Gimbel Eye Centre in Edmonton

Purchased Scanning Laser Ophthalmascope (SLO)

1995-96

Gimbel surgeons are the first to provide LASIK corrective surgery in western Canada

Dr. Gimbel voted one of the top ophthalmologists in the world by his peers

First Canadian retinal surgery in a non-hospital setting

Dr. Gimbel is voted by Calgary as the Citizen of the Century in Science & Academics

Dr. Gimbel presents prestigious Binkhorst Lecture at the American Academy 
of Ophthalmology

Dr. Gimbel develops a strategic technique called Divide and Conquer to break

Gimbel Eye Surgical Centre, privately owned and operated, opens

Dr. Roy Hamilton, anesthesiologist, joins Gimbel Eye Centre

Gimbel Eye Foundation begins

1983

Judy Gimbel, expands high-tech diagnostics and begins to develop technical training programs for staff

First in Canada to purchase Nd:YAG laser to treat secondary cataracts without 
major surgery

Dr. John van Westenbrugge joins Gimbel Eye Centre

Dr. Gimbel develops a revolutionary technique for opening the cataract lens capsule – now standard technique around the world

1982

Dr. Gimbel's wife, Judy Gimbel, with a Masters in Public Health, joins Gimbel Eye Centre full time as Chief Administrator

Dr. Morley Kutzner is the Centre's first Fellow

1980

Dr. Gimbel performs cataract surgery in a non-hospital setting – a first for Canada at the time, but commonplace today

Moved practice to Market Mall Executive Professional Building – tripling space

1975-76

Dr. Gimbel starts performing intraocular lens implantations in conjunction 
with phacoemulsification

Purchased first A-scan biometer in Canada

First Gimbel pediatric cataract patient receives intraocular lens implant

1974

Gimbel is first in Canada to purchase phacoemulsification equipment – a revolutionary method to remove cataracts using a small incision

Dr. Gimbel begins outpatient surgery at Foothills Hospital in Calgary

1964

Dr. Howard Gimbel starts his practice in southwest Calgary

First autorefractor and space eikonometer in Canada
