Gimbel Eye Centre Introduces Next Generation Laser Technology
Bladeless Procedure a First in Alberta
CALGARY, ALBERTA - New laser technology that eliminates the use of a surgical blade for LASIK procedures will soon be available in Alberta, Glenn Gimbel, President of Gimbel Eye Centre announced today. The "all-laser LASIK" is one of the most innovative advances in the field of laser vision correction since LASIK was introduced about fifteen years ago.
"By replacing a hand-held surgical blade with laser technology, we will be able to achieve even more consistently safe and effective LASIK procedures," said Dr. Howard Gimbel, Executive Medical Director for Gimbel Eye Centre.
Traditionally the first step in a LASIK procedure has been to create a "flap" with a surgical blade to expose the corneal tissue to be treated. The cornea is then re-shaped with an excimer laser to improve vision. Using next-generation laser technology, that "flap" can now be created with a silent, computer-guided laser. This new, bladeless form of LASIK technique will also revolutionize the experience of the patient.
The technology [the IntraLase Femtosecond (FS) Laser] - which is also available in Toronto and Winnipeg - is being shown during the Canadian Ophthamological Society Conference in Edmonton this week. Gimbel Eye Centre is acquiring 2 lasers and will begin offering this all-laser LASIK procedure in its Edmonton and Calgary clinics in July.
