Dr. Helen Chung was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She completed medical school with special training in research at the University of Alberta and finished her ophthalmology residency training here in Calgary. She practices general ophthalmology, with interest in a wide variety of ophthalmic presentations, from anterior to posterior segment and beyond. Though early in her career, she has performed nearly 900 full cataract cases and offers different ocular procedures such as pterygium resection, eyelid lesion excision, and glaucoma laser treatments.
She has actively pursued research through her medical career, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and acting as a reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. She has presented her research at local, national, and international conferences, being awarded with research grants both for travel and project support. Some of her research interests include ocular trauma, refractive surgery, glaucoma, and neuro-ophthalmology.
Dr. Chung has a passion for global health and teaching. She has been on previous trips to Arusha, Tanzania to educate street children about HIV/AIDS; involved in developing an electronic medical record system to implement in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya; and traveled to Sri Lanka for an ophthalmology elective at General Teaching Hospital Kandy. She helps expand ophthalmic knowledge in Calgary by teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, technicians, and optometrists.
Outside of Ophthalmology, Dr. Chung enjoys travelling and exploring different cultures, with memorable trips to places such as Japan, Spain, and Peru. While English is her first language, she may offer some services in both Cantonese and Vietnamese.
