LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment

Our experienced eye doctors at Gimbel Eye Centre are now offering an innovative treatment for patients affected by Evaporative Dry Eye conditions. Many people suffer from Evaporative Dry Eye, although it can often be mistaken for other issues, such as allergies. This uncomfortable chronic condition is most commonly triggered by rapid tear evaporation or a buildup of oils that have hardened along the inside of the eyelid. Dry eye is frequently treated with prescription eye drops, warm compresses, or punctal plugs. Now, with the addition of LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System – a revolutionary new dry eye treatment – patients can find fast relief from dry eye with long-lasting results.

Benefits of LipiFlow®

This simple, in-office treatment can be completed in approximately 12 minutes. The procedure generally requires little to no downtime – most patients return to their daily activities shortly after the treatment. Other benefits include:

  • Dependence on daily eye drops is eliminated or significantly reduced
  • Long-lasting relief from symptoms
  • Helps your eyes produce necessary natural oils

How LipiFlow® Works

LipiFlow® takes a different approach to treating dry eye symptoms. Rather than trying to add more liquid to the eye’s tears, LipiFlow® addresses the buildup of oils that are blocking the Meibomian glands. Using gentle warmth and massage, the buildup is broken down and removed from the inside of the eyelid. Once treatment is completed, production of natural oils, called lipids, will resume over the ensuing days. Once lipids are being produced regularly, the symptoms of dry eye should fade away. Results typically last about one year, but many patients have experienced extended relief from dry eye. LipiFlow® cannot cure dry eye, so repeated treatments may be necessary in the future.

Are You a Candidate?

In order to determine if you are an eligible candidate for this procedure, one of our eye doctors must conduct a thorough evaluation. First, you will be asked a series of questions, either over the phone or in person. This questionnaire helps to establish how much dry eye impacts your daily activities. After the questionnaire is completed, your doctor may request to conduct further testing using the LipiView® interferometer. This innovative technology allows us to quickly and non-invasively assess the consistency of the tear film in your eyes. Lastly, a measurement of the quantity and quality of lipid production will be measured using the Meibomian Gland Evaluator™. After your evaluation has been completed, if your doctor determines you are a candidate for this procedure, you can receive LipiFlow® treatment.
