What Our Patients Say
Here is what our patients are saying about the treatment they received at Gimbel Eye Centre.
Courtney Kennedy, Optometry Student, Summer 2012
Dr. Gimbel, I really wanted to thank you for doing my surgery today. I appreciate it so much that I’m not even sure I could express it strong enough in words!
Working at your clinic this summer has been an amazing experience. We learn at optometry school in Waterloo that your practice is the gold standard in Canada for ophthalmology practices and now I can truly attest to that. My learning experience has been above and beyond what I could have ever imagined. Every staff member you employ treats me with so much respect and helps me learn in so many ways. The staff here are so knowledgable and have taught me so much about patient care. The doctors always take the time to explain everything to me, show me things I may not have seen before and they always answer my questions, while always treating me like an equal.
I have been so honoured to work in your clinic and I am so excited to share my experiences and all that I have learned. The optometrist-ophthalmology relationship you employ at your office is so inspiring and makes me very excited to get into the real world.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you again for this incredible opportunity and also for inspiring me to become the best doctor possible and hopefully having a practice that is so patient-centered, just like yours. I look forward to co-managing with you in the near future!

Robbie Merrill – Muay Thai Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts Competitor
I have been considering getting refractive surgery for quite some time, the complications with contact lenses falling out during training sessions and not being able to wear my glasses has always been a setback. It will be extremely beneficial for me to be able to see my opponent clearly and I think it will help me take giant strides in my training regimen as well as in competition. My optometrist highly recommended me to Gimbel Eye Centre. I was unsure so before I went to Gimbel I had consultations at other local eye centres but when I came to Gimbel I knew they were the only place I would trust with such a crucial decision. Their knowledgeable and friendly staff answered all my questions and set my mind at ease. They have the most up to date technology and a long history of successful surgeries. I feel safe and comfortable knowing that my eyes are in the hands of very experienced Doctors in Edmonton and I look forward to the day when I am able to see my family and friends in the crowd cheering me on.
Thanks, Gimbel for all your help.

Ian Cockerline – Canadian Luge Team – 2006 and 2010 Olympics
[finished 20th place in Men's Singles event 2/14/10]
Luge is a very high-speed sport and it requires you to know where you are at every moment of your run. Being very uncomfortable wearing contacts, I felt my vision was holding me back. There simply isn’t time during a run, when you are moving over 130 km per hour, to blink and moisten your contact lenses.
Naturally, I thought laser eye surgery could be a possible solution, but at the same time, I knew I would be putting everything I’ve worked so hard for in the surgeon’s hands — including my chance at a second Olympic Games in front of a home crowd in Vancouver 2010.
I contacted Gimbel Eye Centre because I knew they had a variety of corrective solutions and that they would be able to offer me whatever option suited me best as well as the best chance for success. In the end, I chose PRK surgery and I have had no regrets.
I wake up in the morning and can see the clock without any help and I have yet to miss my glasses or contacts. Not only is it a blessing to my everyday life to be free from corrective lenses, it is also already helping me achieve my sport goals. I’ve already noticed a boost in my awareness of where I am while practicing our starts this dry land season in less time than was expected — and I can’t wait to apply that improvement to true high speed driving.
From the first telephone call to Gimbel, I could tell they were not only highly professional, but that they were genuinely interested in helping me. As an Olympic athlete, I contact a lot of companies asking for help and it is refreshing to see a company come through for me and treat me as wonderfully as Gimbel has.
Thank you, Gimbel!

As a high performance biathlete, my eyesight is very important. It is the difference of a hit or a missed target or the seconds that it takes to blink to readjust my contacts. Thanks to Gimbel Eye Centre, I am no longer at this disadvantage during my training and competitions.
I received IntraLase LASIK surgery and my experience was nothing but the best. Dr. Kassab and the staff at Gimbel were amazing. They helped me choose the proper LASIK procedure, performed the surgery with ease and made the recovery time quick and smooth.
In only a few weeks after my surgery I was back into full time training. This includes several hours of physical training a day along with 2-3 hours of shooting time. With my new eyes, I’ve already seen major improvements in my accuracy and speed in shooting, the targets appear crisp and sharp. Plus, I no longer rush home from training sessions to remove those dry itchy contacts!
I look forward to the upcoming race season to try out my new eyes!

“It has been 17 years since I have had my refractive eye surgery, and it is still to this day one of the best things that has ever happened to me. As an active, sports-minded person, it was always inconvenient doing certain sports with either glasses or contact lenses. When wearing contact lenses became more and more difficult, the introduction of laser eye surgery was like a dream come true. Following surgery, I was overwhelmed by this modern-day miracle, and I still count my blessings that I have been so fortunate. It really has been a life-changing experience, and both my vision, and outlook is still 20/20.”
